With our economy looking the way it has been lately, who really has money to be wasting on overpriced Halloween costumes that last one night of trick or treating or one party? Children love to dress up, and have great costumes as well as adults. These great costumes can be made at home with items from a thrift store. Listed here are the five items that can be found at a thrift store to make a great Halloween outfit for a child or adult.

Bridesmaid Dresses

These dresses can make great costumes. If you can find older dresses from the late 80's or 90's, this is a plus. Use older dresses to be a decade prom queen. Who wouldn't love to see an 80's prom queen with teased hair, and bright makeup? Bridesmaid dresses can also be used for a simple queen or princess costume, by pairing the dress with a simple crown or tiara.

Trench Coats

Trench Coats can be great for a few things. Try finding an all black costume and use it for a warlock costume, or even a character from the movie 'The Matrix.' Can't find a black one? Try a tan or brown coat and use it as a detective costume. Find a large magnifying glass and a hat and your set.

Plaid Shirts

Plaid shirts can come in handy for a few costumes. The most popular I have seen is a cowboy or cowgirl. Find a plaid button up shirt and pair it with some jeans, boots and a cowboy hat for an instant costume. Children can even carry with them a small rope as a lasso, or a horse on a stick. Plaid shirts can also come in handy for hillbilly costumes and mountain men. Couple a plaid shirt with a pair of overalls and your set for a great farmer costume.
