Horror Movies You Have not Seen But Should!

Top 10 Horror Reference Movies You will want to see to 'get' the genre.

Ever get lost in conversation because you don't get the references? Ever hear people talk about a movie and think "I need to see that one day" but never get around to it? Well I have decided to compile a list of films I think you should see at least once.

Ever get lost in conversation because you don't get the references? Ever hear people talk about a movie and think "I need to see that one day" but never get around to it? Well I have decided to compile a list of films I think you should see at least once. You may or may not like them, but at least you will know what everyone is talking about. Obviously iconic films like Halloween and Friday the 13th will not be here. Some of these are the more obscure titles that people may not see without prodding. I expect most of you hardcore fans have seen these multiple times. This is mainly for those who are new to the genre and need some background titles so they don't feel lost when conversing with more seasoned fans. This is in no way the official "horror starter kit." Think of these more as supplements.

Top Ten Conversational Must-sees:

10.Cannibal Holocaust - You may or may not be into cannibalistic horror but that is not the point. The point is that this film is controversial and people yap about it. If you want to be in the loop you should include it in your viewing list. There are some very gory scenes and even some that may turn the stomach but it is notorious for many reasons.

9. Nosferatu - This film is how vampire films started. It may not be scary by today's standards but folks back in the day were blown away when this one first reared its head. If you wanna know how it all began this is the way to do it.

8. Martin - Speaking of vampire films, this one is wild. After cooling his heels from the success of his first zombie film, Romero broke out this little number. I guarantee you have seen nothing quite like it. This is a definite must-see for any fan of Uncle George.

7. Suspiria - This one is an acquired taste for some. There are fans who are amazed by it and those who find it boring. It is most assuredly a film maker's film, but you will never know into which category you fall if you don't check it out for yourself.

6. The Toxic Avenger - Not only is Toxie the spokesperson for Troma films, he is the real reason they hit it so big. If you are unfamiliar with Troma this is the best place to start. It is unconventional and tons of fun. It also provides many opportunities of quotability.

5. Dead Alive - Often called the goriest film ever made, this Peter Jackson movie is out there for sure. I challenge you to deny its splatter effect. You can't really call yourself a zombie fan if you haven't seen this one. And if you think Jackson started with Lord of the Rings, smack yourself over the head and rent this bad boy toute de suite.

4. Zombi 2 - See what I said above about being a zombie fan? Yeah that applies here as well. You can call it Zombie, Zombi, Zombi 2...I don't care. Just make sure you see it. This is the Italian answer to Romero. Besides how could you NOT want to see a zombie battle a shark? No matter who wins...the fans are victorious. I personally find it very scary plus it contains the terrific eye gouging scene (which placed on my top ten eye poppers list)

3. I Spit on Your Grave - Talk about controversial. View this one with care as it could go either way. If you are a fan of revenge exploitation this is right up your alley. If not, you may be miffed by it. But if you want to know what the ruckus is about, you have to watch to find out. It contains graphic rape scenes and violence so I cannot recommend it to younger viewers but it is one of those films that has built a reputation and will keep it for many years.

2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Nothing beats seeing this film in the theater complete with costumes and props. Toast anyone? But you can still see what all the fuss is about even if you have to watch it on video. I won't even mention the fact that when I was in high school we would listen to the soundtrack in the car and pull over to do the Time Warp...oops I just did. Oh well, I may be a geek but I had a great time doing it. And Curry is one sexy transvestite.

1. A Clockwork Orange - Now some of you may bitch and moan that this made number one. You can do your worst. I personally find it to be all horrorshow and ultraviolent. Perhaps you need a kick in the gulliver if you have never viddied this one on screen. Evidence of the ol' glassies! Nothing up our sleeves. If you have no idea what the hell I just said, then you need to find out. Kubrick was way more than The Shining. This one made number one because I believe it is a must-see for any genre. And while it may not be conventional horror, it is surely horrific. No film fan should be without. Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

Honorable Mention:

Ed Gein as Jaws - Okay I couldn't help myself. That is just a little joke for my regular readers since those two have been answers for so many things in the past. What a tweest!

Back to the seriousness of it all. This is but a sampling of films that I think the masses could miss out on so I felt the need to share them. Please list any others you think should be added as ten is a mite small of a number to squeeze down to so I had to leave some off. Damn me for writing about Clockwork last. Now me gulliver's all muddied with weirdy speech. - By MovieMaven for HorrorMovies.ca

Do you, no matter what you believe spiritually, see the hypocrisy in...?
Do you see the hypocrisy in Halloween? All year long parents deal with children having nightmares, being scared of the dark and so on and so forth. As children are prone to do at various ages. As parents we teach our children the difference between fantasy and reality. We teach against these things and depending on what religion we adhere to, we even teach our children that these things are "evil." But one month out of the year that is all but abandoned as even a lot of "religious" people decorate their houses with ghoulish scenes and look for the scariest costumes to dress their kiddies up as. They laugh and giggle as they put out there ghost and witch decors around the house. For this one month, we embrace death and all its about, and encourage our children to do so, too. Do you see the hypocrisy in that?
