Paul Gray, the bassist of the Grammy Award winning rock band Slipknot, was found dead at the TownePlace Suites hotel in Urbandale,
Iowa by a hotel employee. Gray was 38 and leaves behind an expecting wife,
Brenna. Paul Gray, also known as #2, or "The Pig, " was originally from
Los Angeles and transplanted to Iowa (one of two members of Slipknot not originally from Iowa) and helped form the nu-metal band in 1995. Slipknot found early success with their self-title album "Slipknot" reaching platinum status in 1999 as well as seeing "Iowa" and "Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)" also going platinum. The fourth album of Slipknot, 2008's "All Hope is Gone", was their first to debut at #1 and is projected to go
platinum this year.
Gray and Members of Slipknot Known for Masks
Paul Gray and the other eight members of Slipknot were popular in part for dawning
masks that looked like something Jason from the
Friday the 13th movies would wear. Gray and the other members of Slipknot had a dark edge like so many other metal bands that can be easily recognized from many of the titles of their songs, as well as their masks. Gray was later accused by the band Mushroomhead for copying their own bassist for the
Pig Mask that he wore.
During the touring cycle for "Iowa", Paul Gray used a black mask with dark eye and nose holes, with a small slit near his mouth, and it showcased a striking resemblance to
The Man in the Iron Mask. During the "Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)" touring cycle for Slipknot, the mask of Gray took on a more facial shape and contained small angled metal bars inside a larger mouth area. It was decorated with a bullet hole and small cracks.
Death of Gray Drug-Related?
Many people are suspecting the death of Paul Gray may be drug related even though an autopsy has yet to be performed. In 2003, Gray was arrested after police discovered marijuana, cocaine and two syringes in his vehicle following a traffic accident in
Des Moines. Those charges were eventually dropped even though Gray admitted he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. Gray was sentenced to one year informal probation.
Celebrities Falling by the Wayside
The last two months have been tough on the music scene. In addition to losing Paul Gray, they have lost Peter Steele and Ronnie James Dio. Brittany Murphy's husband,
Simon Monjack, was found dead the same day as Paul Gray, at age 39. Brittany Murphy died just 5 months ago on December 20th.

What movie has that scary pigman in it?
The last time I went to a Six Flags Fright Fest, I saw a statue of a man wearing a bloody pig mask and an apron that had bits of grisle and a bloody hand print on it. He was holding a butcher knife and standing near a sort of meat cutting station that also had hand prints on it. This statue was in the area where Six Flags put life-size figurines from movies. There were some figures from the movie Silent Hill nearby, but I'm pretty sure the pigman isn't from Silent Hill.
